An overnight session at Choctaw Durant with three coolers in it. The coolers were bad luck. The river fold that came after one of them was me.

I sat down at Choctaw Durant on a Monday morning and got up on Tuesday afternoon.

Somewhere in between, the room turned over more times than I can remember. Dealers rotated, the dinner crowd came and went, the late night regulars showed up, and then the morning crowd took their seats like I had never left. Mostly because I had not.

It was a no-limit hold'em cash game, the kind of table I like: loose enough that the pots get big, friendly enough that the hours slide by. I did not plan a marathon. The game was good, I was focused, and every time I thought about leaving there was another orbit worth playing.

It was a losing session, and I am not going to dwell on the number. What I want to write about is how it went wrong, and the one decision that still bugs me.

Three coolers

I got coolered three times. If you do not play, a cooler is a hand where you have something very strong, your opponent has something slightly stronger, and nobody at the table is folding. You did not misplay it. The cards lined up so that all the chips were going in, and they went the wrong way.

One cooler is poker. Two in a session stings. By the third it starts to feel personal, even though you know it is not. Each one took a big bite out of my stack, and each one landed in a spot I would play the same way again.

That is the strange thing about coolers. On paper they are the easiest hands to accept, because there was no mistake to fix. In practice they are the hardest to shake, because there is no lesson to hold onto either. You just lost a lot of chips for being dealt a good hand.

The fold

The coolers I can live with. The hand I keep replaying is the one that came after one of them.

Not long after taking one of those beats, I got to the river in a hand, faced a bet, and folded. I had the winner.

I never logged the hand, so every card is face down. What I remember is when it happened and how it ended.

I know why it happened. I had just been burned holding a strong hand, and the memory was fresh. When the river bet came I was not really reading the player in front of me. I was reading the last hand. Some part of me had decided that a big bet meant I was beat, and it made the decision before I had thought it through.

That is tilt, even if it does not look like the usual kind. Nobody slammed the table or shoved with rags. It was quieter than that: a little fear, a little gun-shy, enough to talk me out of a pot I had already won. The cooler cost me chips. The fold after it cost me a pot I had earned.

What I am taking home

When I logged the session afterward I did not write much, just a line about the coolers and the fold. Looking at it now, that line is the whole session. The coolers were bad luck. The fold was me.

What I am keeping from this one:

A cooler is over when the hand is over. The next hand does not know what happened in the last one, and I should not play it like it does.

Notice the quiet tilt. Playing scared after a beat costs as much as playing angry. It just does not feel like tilt while it is happening.

Take a breath after a big loss. Sitting out an orbit after a cooler costs nothing. Folding a winner costs a pot.

Know when the session is over. Overnight into the next afternoon is a long time to keep making good decisions, and being tired makes it easier for one bad hand to become a bad read on the next.

I will be back at Choctaw. The game was good, the people were good, and the cards even out. Next time the cooler comes, and it will, I want to let it go before the river does.

A stop loss does not change the odds of a single hand, and it is still the best decision I make all night. Why it works, how I pick the number, and how to make standing up feel like finishing rather than giving up.

There is a moment in a losing session when you reach for your wallet and the thought arrives fully formed: one more buy-in and I can get it back.

It sounds like a plan. It is not a plan. It is the loss talking, and it has picked the one moment when I am least able to argue with it.

So I argue with it earlier. Before I sit down, I decide how much I am prepared to lose that day, and when that much is gone, I stand up. That is a stop loss, and this post is about why it works and how to actually honor it, which is the harder half.

The honest part first

A stop loss does not change the math of any hand. The cards do not know you are down $400. A hand you play well when you are stuck is worth exactly what it would be worth if you were up. If you are playing your best game in a good game, quitting because of the number in front of you costs you money, not saves it.

That is true, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. It is also not the situation a stop loss is for.

Why it works anyway

A stop loss is not a bet on the cards. It is a bet on me, and specifically on two things I cannot check from inside the session.

Am I still playing my game? After a big loss I am not at baseline. I call a bit wider because I want to win a pot. I bluff a spot I would normally give up. None of it feels like tilt. It feels like finally getting aggressive. The tilt guide puts it better than I can: tilt does not feel like tilt at the start, it feels like clarity.

Is this still a good game? Sometimes I am losing because the cards are cold. Sometimes I am losing because two players at the table are better than I am, and the cards are only how I am finding out. From the chair those look identical.

Now look at what each choice costs. Take the example player from the running bad guide: a $1/$2 winner at $10 an hour. Say they are down two buy-ins with three hours left in the session.

If they leave and they were still playing well, they give up three hours of their edge. That is $30, on average.

If they stay and the loss has turned them from a $10 an hour winner into a $10 an hour loser, which is not much of a slide, the three hours cost them $30 instead of earning it. And that is the gentle version. The real cost of playing badly when stuck is the one big pot you should not have been in.

So leaving costs a small, known amount. Staying risks a larger, unknown one, and the person deciding whether it is safe to stay is the one person at the table who cannot judge it.

Leaving does not lock in the loss

This is the part that makes it hard to stand up. Walking away feels like making the loss permanent, as if staying keeps it open and leaving signs the papers.

It does not work that way. I wrote about this the last time: the next session does not know about this one. Getting even tonight and getting even next Tuesday are the same thing in expectation. The only difference is which version of me is playing, and next Tuesday's version has slept.

The money is not lost by standing up. It was lost in the hands. Standing up is the only thing on the table that cannot lose any more of it.

How I pick the number

I count in buy-ins, not dollars, because it scales with the game and because it matches the physical moment: reaching for more money.

1 in 33

How often the example player finishes a six hour session two full buy-ins down. Three buy-ins down is about one session in 280.

A genuine winner hits those numbers sometimes, so reaching the stop is not proof that I played badly. But it is rare enough that when it happens, something besides ordinary bad luck is worth suspecting, and the decision about what to do next should be made by somebody calm.

Two buy-ins or three is a personal choice, and it should fit your bankroll. If a single day can take a big bite out of your roll, the bankroll guide is the better place to start than this post.

What matters more than the exact number is that it exists before the first hand, and that it never moves during the session. A stop loss that gets renegotiated at the table is not a stop loss. It is a starting offer.

Making the loss complete

Here is the mental part, and it is the one I had to practice.

I stop thinking of it as quitting. The number I chose before I sat down is how long the session is. When it is reached, the session is not cut short. It is complete. Same as when I planned to play until midnight and midnight came.

Some things that help me hold to it:

Bring only the buy-ins you are willing to lose. The cleanest stop loss is an empty pocket. If the third buy-in is at home, there is nothing to negotiate.

Say the number out loud when you sit down. To a friend, or just to yourself. A number spoken before the session belongs to a calmer person, and it is easier to keep a promise to them.

Decide what happens next before you need to. Rack up, cash out, walk to the car. Do not stand at the rail watching the next hand. Watching is how you end up back in the seat.

Log the session before you drive home. Writing it down is the line under it. It turns I am down $400 and I want it back into that was a $400 session, which is a fact, and facts do not ask for anything.

The last one matters most to me. A loss that is still in your head feels open. A loss that is in your log is a row, one of many, and it reads very differently next to all the others.

If the walk from I need it back to the parking lot is the part you find hard, Untilt has short resets written for exactly that moment.

Log is free, all of it, and works offline with no account. Close the session when the stop is hit, and you will see in a few months whether the stop ever cost you anything. I would bet it has not.

After the best night I had had in months, I went back the next day to play my normal game and leave my average alone. The average had other plans, and it did not need a bad day to carry them out.

I had one of those days. Every pair held, every draw got there, and every close spot went my way. I drove home doing the arithmetic on my hourly rate in my head and liking every version of it.

The next day I went back. Not to chase anything. I told myself I would just play my normal game, the same game that had been working all along, and my average would be fine. One ordinary session was not going to touch a number like that.

By the dinner break I had given back a good piece of it, and the drive home was quieter.

The day before was not my normal game

This is the part I did not want to hear. My normal game did not make the draws come in. The cards did. My normal game was there, doing what it always does, and the cards turned up on top of it.

The running bad guide has an example player I like, because the example is honest about how much of a result is noise. They win 5 big blinds an hour, with a standard deviation of 50. At $1/$2 that is $10 an hour, and over a six hour session they expect to win about $60.

1 in 28

How often that player wins $500 or more in a six hour session. They are a genuine winner, and nothing about how they play on that day has to be any different from every other day.

A day like that is not a reading on their skill. It is a reading on their skill with a very large dose of luck mixed in, and from inside the session there is no way to tell how much of each went into it.

The average does not come to collect

Here is the thing I had backwards. I thought of the law of averages as something that would come looking for me, that a great day had to be paid for with a bad one. That is not how it works. The cards do not remember Tuesday.

What happens is plainer and somehow worse. The next session is drawn from the same distribution as every other session I have ever played. Yesterday does not make it better and it does not make it worse. It is just an ordinary day, and ordinary days are rough more often than it feels like they should be.

For the example player, an ordinary six hour session ends in a loss 40% of the time. It gives back $250 or more, half of the great day, about one time in ten. That is not a cold streak. That is one session in ten, with nothing wrong.

So when the law of averages showed up the very next day, it was not catching up with me. It was just Wednesday. I fought the law, and the law did not even have to try.

Even a normal day lowers the number

The part that surprised me most is that I did not need a losing day for my average to drop. Any ordinary day does it.

Say the example player has 60 hours logged at exactly their 5 big blinds an hour, which is $600. Then the great day: $500 in six hours. Their hourly jumps from $10 to $16.67. That number feels like information. It feels like proof that something has clicked.

Now they come back and have an exactly average day, $60 in six hours. Not good, not bad, the most likely result there is. Their hourly goes down to $16.11.

If they break even it goes to $15.28. If they give back $250 it goes to $11.81, and they have played the same on all three days.

That is the law of averages, and it is the whole of it. A number that one lucky day pushed up comes back toward where the player really is, and every session after it does a bit of the pushing. It does not need a bad beat. It does not need me to play badly. It only needs more hours, and they always arrive.

Did I play my normal game?

I would like to say yes. I think I did. But I notice I am not sure, and I notice why.

After a day like that you are not quite at baseline. Everything worked, so the marginal call feels like the right call and the thin value bet feels thick. Nobody calls that tilt, because tilt is supposed to feel bad. It does not feel bad. It feels like confidence, and it is one of the few states where you can play worse while feeling better than usual.

I do not have a hand from that second day I can point to. I did not write any down, because I was not expecting the day to be interesting. That is the mistake I can actually fix.

What I do now

I do not look at the hourly after one great day. It is the least reliable that number will ever be, and it is reliable in exactly the direction I want to believe.

I log the great day like any other session, the same way I log the bad ones, because it is one session out of all of them and should get one session's worth of weight. And I write down a hand or two from the day after, because the day after is when I am least likely to notice that my normal game has quietly drifted.

If the hard part for you is the day after a great one, the walk back from I have figured this out to a baseline where each decision gets made on its own, that is what Untilt is for. Feeling invincible is a state too, and it is worth checking before you sit down.

Log is free, all of it, and works offline with no account. It will tell you your real hourly rate, which after one great day is a smaller number than the one you were doing in your head on the drive home.

Ace-six against ace-king on an ace-ace-eight board, with a short stack, a $25 bet min-raised to $50, and a six on the river. I tagged it misplayed? because I had won it. Counting it answered the question, and not the way I expected.

A six came on the river and I won the pot. Then I opened the app, logged the hand, and tagged it misplayed?

That is not modesty. Winning a hand is the easiest way there is to learn the wrong thing from it, and I wanted the question written down before the win had a chance to answer it for me.

He showed his ace-king when he moved in. I never wrote down the king's suit, and the ace, as it turns out, could only have been one card.

What happened

The big blind had the shorter stack, and I was first to act after the flop. The flop came ace, ace, eight, and I had the ace and six. I bet $25, he raised to $50, and I called.

The turn was the five of spades. I bet $100. He had $121 left and moved all of it in, so it cost me $21 more to call, into a pot of about $550. I called, and he turned over ace-king straight away, the way you do when you are sure. I left mine face down, the way you do when you are not.

The river was the six. Aces full of sixes, and his trip aces with the best kicker in the deck were no good.

There was one ace he could have

Count the aces. I had the ace of spades. The board had the ace of hearts and the ace of clubs. That leaves one ace anywhere in the deck, the ace of diamonds, and for him to have trips he needed exactly that card.

That feels like it should make me comfortable. It is the opposite. When he raised the flop, the question was not "does he have an ace", it was "does he have the ace, with a kicker above a six". And most kickers are above a six: the seven through the king beat me, and an eight made him a full house.

On the flop, against the hand he actually held, I was winning outright about one time in nine and splitting it nearly one time in five. That is 20% of the pot, for a hand that felt like trips.

Did he raise too small?

This is the question I asked first. I bet $25 and he made it $50, which is the smallest raise the rules allow.

It gave me a price, but it did not cost him anything. After the flop there was about $330 in the middle and he had $121 left. With that little behind and that much in the pot, the rest of his money was going in on the turn whatever either of us did. A shove on the flop would have put me all in with two cards to come and 20%. His line put me all in with one card to come and 13.6%. That is a better deal for him, not a worse one.

A player who is an 80% favorite wants you to keep going, and a small raise is how you ask. He did not raise too small. Then a six came.

So did I misplay it?

I was ready to say the turn bet. Betting $100 into a man who has just raised you, with a hand that only beats his bluffs, is the sort of thing I would circle on anybody else's hand.

The numbers say otherwise. With $121 behind in a $330 pot, nothing on the turn was really a decision. If I check, he moves in and I am calling $121 into $450 with the same cards. If I bet, he moves in and I call $21. Either way the same money ends up in the middle, and the river is still coming. My $100 just went in a few seconds earlier.

3.7%

What I needed to win to call the last $21, with about $550 already in the pot. Three sixes win it on the river, and three eights and three fives split it, which is 13.6% of the pot against the exact hand he had.

So the only real decision was the flop, and there the question is whether to call $25 more knowing the rest was coming. That is $146 to win a pot that ends up around $570, so I needed about 26%.

Against ace-king I had 20%, and calling would lose me about $30 on average. But I did not know it was ace-king. A short stack who min-raises that flop does it with the last ace and any kicker, and with eights full. That is 49 hands, 16 of them worse than mine, and against all of them together I had 35%. Against the hand I was actually facing, I was behind. Against the hands I could have been facing, the call was right.

The answer to the question mark is no. I played it fine, I was behind, and I got lucky.

The numbers I skipped

The app has a line for the pot swing, and it tells you to skip it unless the number is the point of the hand. I skipped it. The $25, the $50, the $100 and the $121 only came back to me afterwards, when somebody asked.

Without them, I had this hand down as a bad turn bet that got bailed out. With them, the turn was never a decision at all. The numbers were the whole answer, and I was one question away from not having them.

Why the question mark

He will remember this hand as a bad beat, and he is right. I will remember it as a win, and that is right too. Neither of those tells me anything about how I played it.

The tag is there because the result and the decision are different objects, and the result shouts. A question mark keeps the decision open long enough to count it. This time the count came back clean, which is worth knowing as well: the next time I have top trips with a weak kicker and a short stack raises me, I call, and I do not let one six convince me it was clever.

I called an all-in with the ace-high flush and lost to a straight flush, nine to king. Seven diamonds could have completed my flush. Six of them win the pot. I caught the seventh.

He moved all in. I called, because of course I called, and he turned over the king and the ten of diamonds. The queen that had just made my hand had made him a straight flush, nine to king, on the same card.

This looks like the sort of hand there is nothing to learn from. That is exactly the sort of hand where the lesson hides, so I did the arithmetic on it afterwards, and there was more in there than I expected.

Seven diamonds

Count what was left in the deck on the turn. Thirteen diamonds exist. I had the ace. He had the king and the ten. The board had the four, the nine and the jack. Six accounted for, seven still out there:

2♦ 3♦ 5♦ 6♦ 7♦ 8♦ Q♦

Six of those give me an ace-high flush and the pot. He has a king-high flush in every single one of them, which means in six cases out of seven he is the one paying me off.

The seventh is the queen.

Six of the seven

Diamonds left in the deck that complete my flush, and how many of them win me the hand. The seventh is the queen, and it is the only card in the deck that makes him a straight flush.

Could I have folded?

No, and it is not close.

On that final board, holding the ace of diamonds, exactly two holdings in the deck beat me: the ten and king of diamonds, and the ten and eight of diamonds. Two combinations out of the 990 he could have been dealt. Both of them need the ten of diamonds, which is the one card in the deck that turns a board full of diamonds into a board full of straight flushes.

Everything else loses to me. Every worse flush, every straight, every set, every two pair, every bluff. Fold the ace-high flush there to save yourself two combinations, and you spend the rest of the year folding to the other nine hundred and eighty-eight.

One caveat I have to make, and it is the honest kind: I do not remember the fourth board card. If it paired the board, a full house joins the list and the count goes up. But it does not change the decision, and it does not change what follows.

The decision was two streets earlier

Here is the part I could only see by counting.

On the turn I had a pair of nines and four to the nut flush, and I felt like a man in reasonable shape waiting for a good card. I was not. He had the king and ten of diamonds, and the board had three diamonds on it. Three plus two is five.

He had a flush already. I was drawing.

I could not tell you what that fourth board card was, and it turns out not to matter. There are thirty-eight cards it could have been, and I checked all of them: not one leaves me ahead on that turn. The best I ever have is trip nines, and trip nines lose to a flush.

So this was never a hand where I was winning and got hit by lightning. It was a hand where I lost the lead the moment the third diamond landed, kept drawing, and got there second.

The ace of diamonds stops you thinking

That is the actual lesson, and it is not about the river at all.

A nut flush draw feels like a draw to the nuts, because the word is right there in the name. It is not one. It is a draw to the best flush, which is a different and much smaller claim, and on a board that is three to a flush with a nine and a jack in it, the distance between those two things is a player holding the ten of diamonds.

Two things follow that are worth carrying to the table, and neither of them is "fold more":

Three cards of one suit on board with connectivity in them means the flush is not automatically the nuts. Four of one suit on board means a straight flush needs somebody to hold one card, not two, and there are usually two cards that do it.

The ace does not tell you where you stand, it only tells you where you stand among flushes. When the board is doing something else as well, that is a much narrower piece of information than it feels like.

What I nearly did with this hand

I nearly filed it under cooler and went to get a coffee.

The app I built has a tag for that, and I have used it plenty, and it is the right tag for this hand. But cooler is a verdict, and the trouble with writing down a verdict is that it closes the question. Six weeks later I would have read "lost nut flush to straight flush, cooler" and learned precisely nothing, because everything worth knowing about this hand happened on a street the note does not mention.

What I wrote instead was the boring version. Board went three diamonds on the turn. I treated a flush draw as a draw to the nuts. He already had the flush. River gave us both what we were looking for and his was better.

That note is worth something, because the next time a board goes three to a suit with connectivity in it, I have a hand to think about rather than a shrug. The verdict and the record are not the same object, and only one of them is any use later.

Log is free, all of it, and works offline with no account. The tags are there and they are quick, but the line underneath them is the part that pays, and it takes about fifteen seconds. Write the street where it actually went wrong, not the one where it hurt.

Both of mine were the same suit, though I could not tell you which. Her two are face down because nobody ever turned them over.

Trip eights, on the flop, against the raiser. She bet, and she bet small.

I called. The nine came on the turn, which gave me eights full of nines and gave her nothing at all. She stayed in for the river anyway, looking for a third queen. It did not come. I bet, and she folded.

Then, because the hand was over and there was nothing left to protect, she told me she had pocket queens.

What she was chasing

Two outs

Both of them queens. On the flop, when she bet, I was 90.4% to win the hand; on the turn, when she called to see one more card, 95.4%. Every runout enumerated rather than sampled, and in all of them her only winning card is a queen.

That is the whole shape of it. From the moment the flop landed she needed one of exactly two cards left in the deck, and for the first street of it she was the one doing the betting.

The turn call is more interesting than it looks. Two outs with one card to come is about 4.6%, so on raw price she needs better than twenty to one and was certainly not getting it. But the implied odds there are about as good as implied odds ever get. If the queen lands she has queens full of eights, I have eights full of nines, and a man holding a full house does not fold on the river. She would have had my entire stack, and she would have deserved it.

So the call is not the crime. It is defensible, and against a lot of opponents it is correct. What is worth noticing is that she only had to make that decision at all because of the way she played the street before it.

The under-bet, fairly

Betting small with queens on a paired board is not a stupid play. It is a common one, and it comes from an instinct that is basically sound.

Queens are a big hand right up until the board pairs, and then they are a big hand with a problem. She wanted to keep betting without committing, to stay in charge of a pot she had opened, and to find out where she stood without paying much to find out. Every one of those wants is reasonable.

The trouble is that a small bet on a paired board does not deliver any of them:

It does not fold out an eight. Nothing holding an eight is folding, at any price, ever. The one hand she needed gone is the one hand that is never going anywhere.

It does not charge anything enough. A draw gets a price it would take all night, and so does a hand like mine, which is not drawing at all.

It does not answer her question. A bet that every hand calls tells you nothing when it gets called. She paid to buy information and the information came back blank.

So the flop bet built a pot she could not win and told her nothing, and it handed her a turn decision she then had to get right. She got that one about right and it cost her anyway. That is usually how sizing errors are paid for: not on the street where they happen.

The part that is actually about me

Here is the bit worth sitting with, and it is not about her play at all.

I never saw her cards.

She folded on the river. The queens, if they were queens, went into the muck face down. There is no version of this hand in which anybody verified anything. What I have is a sentence she said afterwards, in a good mood, having just made what she plainly considered a disciplined laydown.

I am not accusing her of anything. I have no reason at all to think she was lying. But look at how many ways that sentence gets said without anybody intending to mislead:

She had queens, and said so.

She had jacks, and rounded up, the way everybody rounds up.

She folded something she was embarrassed by and named a better hand, which is such an ordinary reflex that people do it without noticing.

She genuinely misremembered, thirty seconds later, which is a thing human beings do constantly and are certain they never do.

All four produce exactly the same sentence. I cannot tell them apart, and neither can you, and no amount of thinking about her face while she said it is going to change that.

And yet. If I do not write it down carefully, she had queens is what survives in my head. Six weeks from now it has stopped being a claim and turned into a fact about how she plays, and I am making real decisions with real money against a read whose entire evidence base is that somebody said a thing once.

That is the quiet way a read goes wrong. Not by being wrong at the time. By being unlabeled, and then aging into certainty.

One more thing, and it is embarrassing

The first time I wrote this hand down, I had her folding the turn.

She did not fold the turn. She called it, chased her queen to the river, and folded when I bet. I got that wrong within the week, about a hand I was sitting in, with my own money in the middle.

Which is the argument, really. If my memory of my own hand drifts that far that fast, the sentence somebody else said to me across a table is not evidence of anything. It is a nice thing to know and a terrible thing to rely on.

The rule I use now

When I log a hand, anything somebody told me goes in the note with the word said still attached.

"She said queens." Never "she had queens."

Four characters, and it is the entire difference: one of them is something I watched happen and the other is testimony from an interested party. Both are worth keeping. They are not worth keeping in the same box, and memory does not have two boxes.

It costs nothing to write the hand down the way it actually reached me. It costs a surprising amount to find out, a year later, that half of what I know about the regulars in my game came from things they told me while stacking their chips.

Log is free, all of it, and works offline with no account. A hand takes fifteen seconds, and there is a line for the note, which is where the word said goes.

I limped the button with 7♠8♠ at $1/$2 instead of raising, flopped two pair, and lost to a bigger one. What the two dollars actually bought was four more opponents.

I saved two dollars.

Live $1/$2, and I had the seven and eight of spades on the button. Raising was the obvious thing and I did not do it. I put in two, because suited connectors like company, because limping is cheap, and because I have done it a thousand times without once thinking about it.

The flop paired both my cards. Two pair, eights and sevens, on the button, in a pot with a crowd in it.

By the river somebody had a bigger two pair, and he had it because the pot had been cheap enough for him to be in it at all.

Four hundred dollars.

What two dollars actually buys

I have always known limping is bad the way you know a road is icy: as a warning rather than as a number. So after this one I sat down and worked out the number, because the warning was plainly not doing anything.

Flopped two pair is a strong hand. Against one opponent it is close to a lock. Against five it is not really a hand at all.

80.6% to 43.9%

How often flopped two pair is still good by the river, against one opponent and against five. A million simulated hands at each table size, against opponents holding anything at all, which is what a limped pot is full of.

The whole curve, because the shape of it is the argument:

One opponent: 80.6%

Two: 67.0%

Three: 57.0%

Four: 49.6%

Five: 43.9%

The first player to tag along costs thirteen points. By the fifth, a hand that was a four to one favorite has stopped being a favorite at all.

Nothing about my cards changed between the top of that list and the bottom. The only thing that changed was how many people were allowed to see a flop with me for two dollars.

A raise is a filter before it is a bet

Here is the part I had backwards for years.

I thought raising was for taking the pot down, or for building one. Sometimes it is. On the button with 7♠8♠ it is mostly neither. A raise is a filter, and what it filters out is not the hands that would beat me in a fair fight. It is the hands that were never going to be in the fight.

Twelve dollars folds out nothing good, and it is not supposed to. It folds out jack-four offsuit, and queen-nine offsuit, and king-five offsuit: the hands that call two dollars because two dollars is nothing and the flop might come.

Now look at what beats eights and sevens. To make a bigger two pair, a hand needs two cards that pair the board above an eight. Almost every one of those hands, at $1/$2, is a hand that calls a limp and folds to a raise.

I did not get unlucky. I paid two dollars to keep alive the exact category of hand that had me drawing thin, and then one of them turned up, which is what happens when you invite enough of them.

Putting a number on it

Say the pot got to four hundred dollars, which this one did.

At 80.6% my share of that pot is $322. At 43.9% it is $176. The two dollars I saved cost about a hundred and forty-seven dollars of equity in a single hand, before one decision had been made after the flop.

That is seventy-three times the money I saved. And it is not the exceptional case, it is the ordinary one. It usually goes unbilled, because most of the time the flop misses me completely and the two dollars looks free.

The part I cannot tell you

Here is the confession.

I cannot tell you that board.

I know my hand, because it is the hand in the story. I know what I flopped. I know what beat me and I know what it cost, because four hundred dollars is not a number anybody misremembers. Everything in between is gone. The third card on the flop, the turn, the river that did it, the sizing on every street: I did not write a word of it down, and by the time it mattered to me it was a week old.

That is annoying for a blog post. It is worse than annoying for a player, because the missing part is the part that answers the only question worth asking, which is whether this was one bad night or a habit.

One limped button is a story. Forty of them in a month is a leak with a dollar figure on it, and those two things look identical from the inside. You cannot tell them apart by remembering harder, because that is a question about a pattern, and patterns only exist in writing.

Which is the difference between running bad and playing bad, and it is the one question in this game a record answers and a memory does not. This hand was not variance. I know that now because I did the arithmetic afterwards, not because I could feel it at the table. At the table it felt like a cooler. It felt exactly like the hand where I folded correctly and lost anyway, and those two nights have nothing whatsoever in common except how they felt.

Log is free, all of it, and works offline with no account. A session takes ten seconds and a hand takes fifteen, which is roughly the amount of effort I did not spend on the most expensive two dollars of my year.

I folded ace-high with a backdoor flush draw into a dry side pot. Runner-runner spades. The right fold, the worst reveal, and the reason I did not tilt.

I folded the correct hand and then watched the deck hand me the nut flush, one card at a time, in front of everybody.

Nobody at the table said anything. There is nothing to say. The dealer turned the river, the guy next to me made a noise, and I sat there doing arithmetic on a pot I had already given away.

I had every right to tilt.

That is the whole reason I am writing this one down, because "I had every right to tilt" is not a defense. It is a warning label. It is the exact condition under which tilt does the most damage, and it took me about ninety seconds at that table to work out why.

The hand

Live $1/$2, three of us to the flop, me on the button.

First position was a short stack having a rough night, playing fast and getting faster. He shoved preflop. Second position called. I looked down at the ace of spades and another spade and called to close the action, which is not close: against the range a frustrated short stack shoves, a suited ace playing three ways is a call and it is not a difficult one.

I want to be honest about something. I do not remember my kicker. I remember that it was a spade. That detail turns out to be the whole point of the post, so let it sit there.

The flop came one spade and nothing else: no pair, no draw worth the name. Ace high and a backdoor flush draw, which is to say: I needed the turn and the river to both come spades.

Second position led out for $50.

The short stack was already all-in, so his money was in the middle and settled. There was no real side pot to fight over, just $50 asking me to pay to keep going with ace high.

I folded. Of course I folded.

Turn: spade.

River: spade.

The math nobody wants after the fact

A backdoor flush draw comes in about 4.2% of the time. Roughly one hand in twenty-four.

1 in 24

How often runner-runner brings the flush home. Which means folding was right about twenty-three times out of twenty-four, and this was the twenty-fourth.

That is the number I made myself say out loud, in my head, before the next hand was dealt. Not because it makes the pot come back. Because it is the actual shape of the decision I made, and the river does not get to reshape it after the fact.

There is a thing people do (I have done it, everybody has done it) where the result reaches backwards and re-grades the decision. The spades arrived, therefore calling was right, therefore folding was wrong, therefore I am an idiot who just cost himself a stack.

None of that follows. The deck does not grade your decisions. The runner-runner does not make the fold wrong. It makes the fold unlucky, and those are not the same thing, and the difference between them is most of what separates a player who lasts from one who does not.

The part that actually stings

Here is where the hand got genuinely funny, in the way that is not funny for about an hour.

Second position, the guy who bet $50, lost to the all-in short stack. His hand was no good.

My flush would have beaten the short stack.

So his $50 folded out the only hand at the table that had the short stack beaten, and then he lost the pot himself. He paid fifty dollars to gift-wrap the whole thing for a man who was already all-in and drawing to stay alive.

This is worth understanding rather than being angry about, because it is one of the most common mistakes in live poker and it is not malice, it is just a rule nobody teaches you.

When somebody is all-in and there is no meaningful side pot, betting is usually wrong. Every additional player who reaches showdown is another chance that somebody beats the all-in, and everybody who is not all-in benefits from that. Bet, and you fold out your own allies. You do not win more when you win, because the side pot is a rounding error. You just remove the field's other chances.

To be clear about how this works: you cannot agree to check it down. Saying it out loud at the table is collusion and you will be corrected, correctly. But nobody needs to say anything, because the incentive is already there for everybody who understands it. He did not understand it. It cost him the pot and it cost me a flush.

Why I did not tilt, and what it would have cost if I had

The pot I did not win was gone the moment the river hit. It was not the thing at risk any more.

The thing at risk was the next hand.

Tilt, for me, has never looked like throwing cards. It looks like a small adjustment I do not notice making. It looks like calling a $50 bet with ace high two orbits later, because some part of my brain is still holding a receipt that says last time it got there. That is the entire mechanism. One lost pot does not cost you a session. One lost pot that quietly rewrites your calling standards costs you the session, and possibly the next one.

The other post on here is the opposite version of this test: a hand so absurdly good I was shaking, could not write anything down, and nearly lost the details of the best hand I have ever been dealt. Euphoria on one side, injustice on the other, and the same brain in the middle making the same mistake in two directions: letting the result decide how to play the next one.

Process over results is easy to say when the process is winning. The test is a night like this one, where the process was right and the result was a spade, and then another spade.

What I actually did was boring. I said the number to myself. I noted the hand. I sat out a round, got a coffee, came back, and folded the next two hands I would have folded anyway. That is not a technique. It is just the walk from I had every right to tilt back to a baseline where the next decision gets made on its own merits.

If that walk is the part you find hard, and it is the part most people find hard, that is what Untilt is for. Short resets written for exactly this moment: between hands, at the table, when you are right and it did not matter.

And log the hand. Not because a bad beat needs commemorating, but because "I folded correctly and the runner-runner came" is a sentence you can only trust about yourself if you wrote it down at the time. Three months from now, when you are trying to work out whether you have been running bad or playing bad, this hand is one honest data point instead of one vivid memory. Vivid memories are exactly the ones that lie.

Log is free, all of it, and works with no signal and no account. Fifteen seconds, and the fold is on the record as a fold rather than as a grudge.

I flopped a straight flush in a bomb pot. He had a boat.

A double-board bomb pot in a Texas $1/$2 game: 2♦4♦ flopped a six-high straight flush, J6 rivered sixes full of jacks, and the simulation put it at 1 in 34,700.

The dealer spread the first flop and I stopped breathing.

Three of diamonds. Five of diamonds. Six of diamonds.

I was holding the two and the four of diamonds. Cards I had thrown in the muck a thousand times without looking at them, sitting in front of me in a pot I had not chosen to play, and there on the felt was the rest of a straight flush. Not a draw to one. The whole thing, on the flop, with two more streets to come and a second board still to be dealt.

I have played live $1/$2 in Texas for years. I have flopped quads twice and I have been coolered in ways I still think about at stop lights. I had never seen this. Nobody at the table had.

What a bomb pot is, if you have never sat in one

Every so often (usually after a dealer change, sometimes every orbit if the table votes for it) everybody at the table antes the same amount and the dealer skips preflop entirely. No raises, no folding, no reading anybody. Just an ante from all nine seats and then a flop.

In a double-board bomb pot the dealer puts out two complete boards instead of one, and the pot gets split between whoever wins each. Betting runs normally on the flop, turn and river, but every bet is for two chances at once. Win one board and you get half. Win both, scoop it, and you take the whole thing.

That is the game I was in. Nine players, $20 each in the middle before a single card came out, and two boards to come.

Both boards, street by street

The flop. Board one came 3♦ 5♦ 6♦ and I was already there: 2-3-4-5-6, all diamonds, a six-high straight flush. Board two came J-3-5, offsuit, no diamonds. Same two hole cards, and now I had a wrap on that one too: the three and the five paired with my two and four, so any ace or any six would complete a straight.

Seven outs, not eight. The six of diamonds was face up on the other board.

That is the thing about double boards that people forget at the table: it is one deck. The cards on board one are gone from board two. My best card on the second board had already been used to make me unbeatable on the first.

The turn. Board one bricked with a jack. Board two came a six.

So now I had the identical hand twice: 2-3-4-5-6 on both boards, once in diamonds and once in four suits. Somebody bet, I raised, and a guy two seats to my left came along on both.

The river. Board one paired the six. Board two ran out something I could not tell you if you paid me, because by then I was counting his stack.

He moved in. I called before his chips had settled.

He turned over J6 and said "boat" before he saw my hand, which is fair, because on board one he had sixes full of jacks (trip sixes with the pair of jacks alongside), and on board two the same six had given him jacks and sixes. He had improved on both boards, on the same card, and lost more money because of it.

The math, which took a while to believe

I ran it afterwards, because I did not trust any number I could work out at the table. Thirty million simulated double-board bomb pots, dealt properly from one deck, counting how often a single player ends up with what I ended up with.

1 in 34,700

A straight flush on one board and a straight on the other, in the same double-board bomb pot. Roughly 860 times in thirty million simulated hands, or 0.0029%.

Some of the rest of it:

A straight flush on at least one board: about 1 in 1,620. Rarer than most people guess and far more common than the version I got, because a straight flush on one board says nothing about what you have on the other.

Flopping it with exactly 2♦4♦: 1 in 9,800. There are 19,600 flops you can be dealt once your own two cards are known, and precisely two of them finish that hand on the spot: 3♦5♦6♦, or A♦3♦5♦ for the steel wheel. Two flops. Out of nineteen thousand six hundred.

The two boards are not independent. Multiply the probabilities as though they were and you get about 1 in 37,000, which is wrong in my favour. The boards share my hole cards, so a hand shaped like a straight on one is more likely to be shaped like a straight on the other. Correlation moved it from 37,000 to 34,700.

Two more things I noticed only when I laid the hand out to draw it:

I made the same straight on both boards. Six high, twice, one of them in diamonds.

And every six in the deck was face up in that hand. The flop on board one, the river on board one, the turn on board two, and one in his hand. All four, all in play, and three of the four were his outs.

Why he could not fold

I want to be clear that he played it fine.

Put yourself in his seat on that river. He holds J6. Board one shows 3♦ 5♦ 6♦ J 6, and he has sixes full of jacks, a hand that beats every straight, every flush, every set, and every other boat except the one made of jacks. Board two shows J-3-5-6 and he has two pair, which is decent on a board where nobody has represented anything, because nobody could: there was no preflop betting to tell him a single thing about a single opponent.

The only hand on earth that scoops him is 2♦4♦, or the A♦ version of it. On board one he was drawing dead from the moment the flop hit the felt, and he had no way of knowing, because everything that happened afterwards made his hand better.

That is the cruelty of it. The turn gave him a pair of jacks. The river gave him trips. The six on the other board gave him two pair. Every card that improved him pulled him further in, and not one of them was ever going to matter.

The part where I almost lost the whole story

Here is my confession.

I was so far gone (shaking hands, table on its feet, a guy filming from two seats down) that I did not write anything down. Not the ante, not the board, not the stack sizes. I stacked his chips and played another four hours and drove home.

Two days later I tried to tell it properly and could not remember whether board two's flop had the jack first or the five, whether the river had come before or after he checked, how much was actually in the middle. I had the hand. I had lost the shape of it. I rebuilt it that week from the ante size, the seat count, the photograph somebody sent me, and a receipt with a timestamp on it that told me how long I had been sitting there.

I got it back. I got lucky twice.

The hands worth telling are always the ones you are too wired to record, and the sessions worth understanding are the ordinary ones you would never think to. Fifteen seconds at the time is the whole difference between a story you can prove and a story that starts with "I think it was a jack."

That is the entire reason Log exists. A session in under ten seconds, a hand in fifteen, and then it is there in a year when you want to know what actually happened, or whether the last three months were bad luck or bad play, which is the same question in a different mood.

It is free, all of it, and it works with no signal at all, which matters in a card room where the only reliable thing about the wifi is that there is none.

Log the hand. Even this one. Especially this one.
